United Way of Laramie County Will Highlight Local Volunteer Opportunities During National Volunteer Week, April 15-21

National Volunteer Week encourages people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. This year United Way of Laramie County will feature a variety of current volunteer opportunities on their website and Facebook timeline. Some of the program partners with volunteer needs in Laramie County are:

Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne
Looking for adult volunteers that can commit to at least one hour per week. School year hours are M-F 2-7pm. Summer hours are M-F all day. CASA of Laramie County
Do you want to make a positive impact on a child? CASA is looking for volunteers to “Lift up a child’s voice. A child’s life.” Training for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Laramie County is set to begin on May 2. If you are interested, contact CASA now for a volunteer packet and application or for more information call 307.638.1151 or email Laura Schmidt at volunteer@casalc.org.

Wyoming Senior Citizens, Inc.
The Senior Companion Program is looking for caring individuals 55 yrs of age and older to provide friendly one-on-one visits and assistance. This assistance will be provided to individuals who are primarily elderly but are at least 21 years of age and need help maintaining independent living in their homes.  Volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend, meal and mileage reimbursement, and benefits package. Wyoming Family Home Ownership Program
WYFHOP would welcome volunteers to assist our lower income working families who are pursuing financial preparedness class in preparation for home ownership starting April 24:
1. Help with early evening childcare while parents are in class.
2. Assistance with preparation of an evening meal, as families come to class directly from school or work.
3. Offering to be a mentor/ally to the family and meet at least once a month to share low cost/no cost activities and build a sense of community.

United Way of Laramie County announces 2012 Board of Directors and President

CHEYENNE, WYOMING -- United Way of Laramie County is pleased to announce Janet Tilton as President of the 2012 Board of Directors in addition to a roster of several notable Board members. Tilton came to STRIDE Learning Center in June 2011 as Human Resource Manager. Prior to coming to STRIDE she held positions as a financial advisor, real-estate loan processor, manager, trainer, to compliance, to her current position as the manager of human resources.

Janet's community volunteer involvement includes Wyoming State Council of Society of Human Resource Management, Board of Adjustment-City of Cheyenne and United Way of Laramie County. Janet holds her B.S. degree in business management and human resources. She has over 26 years of managerial experience, 18 of which is in the human resource field. She attained certification in Employment Law and a Trainer Certificate in 1994 with the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) in 2008.

Wyoming Free Tax Service Provides Free Community Tax Preparation Service

Free tax preparation, for those who qualify, and information about Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) will be available at Laramie County Community College, 1400 E. College Dr., Training Room #103 Jan. 28 through April 14, 2012 at the following dates and times.

  • Mon. and Wed., 5-7:30 p.m., Jan. 30 – April 11, 2012
  • Sat. 9-11:30 a.m., Jan. 28 – April 14, 2012

Local volunteers will answer questions about EITC eligibility and free tax preparation through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Basic income tax preparation services will be available to qualified Laramie County residents with low- to moderate-incomes, $50,000 total family income or less.

Taxpayers are asked to bring identification, income documentation, deductible expenses, and 2010 tax return, if available.
