As part of our desire to connect more with Eastern Laramie County, United Way  has teamed up with 4 organizations in the Burns, Hillsdale, Albin, and Carpenter area. We know that our entire county has hardworking people who are the backbone of Wyoming. Those individuals are often living and working in the same area as their family generations before them. They are families living many miles from Cheyenne who value hard work, one on one time, and helping neighbors. Smaller communities know that working together and supporting each other is essential to longevity. At United Way of Laramie we feel the same way and that’s why we are excited for the opportunity to accept a generous donation from AA Livestock in Burns, Wyoming, to be leveraged to raise money for Burns Lion’s Club, Laramie County Fire District #6, and other first responders in the area.  This collaboration will bring together Cheyenne area organizations and more rural communities to benefit a fire department which protects 2300 people living in a 289 mile area. This volunteer department is almost 60 years old, operating out of 2 stations. Local EMS associated with the fire department will also receive funding.  Part of the raffle proceeds will help support the Burns Lions Club who’s mission is to empower volunteers to serve their communities. This Club is not quite a year old, and has quickly raised $9,000 with its reinstatement of Burns Day. With 25 members, and growing, the Burns Lion’s Club creates scholarships for local high school students, helps maintain city parks, and steps in for community emergencies like fire, flood, and elderly yardwork.

United Way of Laramie County is thrilled to share the opportunity with these charitable organizations while providing the chance to win meat! Between the price of pork only rising and knowing this pork is coming from a local farm, who has a deep respect for animals, you can be sure it’s a win-win. AA Livestock breeds championship pigs, producing high quality animals for FFA (Future Farmers of America) and 4-H youth to raise and then show. These youth learn the agricultural process, responsibility, work ethic, and ultimately sell the animal at sales and fairs, often for college funds. AA Livestock hogs are regularly 1st in class, Champion market pigs, and Grand champions at shows. Martha and Mark Avery own the farm East of Cheyenne in Burns, Wyoming and is proud to be a United Way supporter.
